Buying and selling of women’s hair is increasing rapidly in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Especially during the festive season, there is a rise in the prices of hair, which is also providing employment to the local people. Women earn money by selling their hair, and some women also receive utensils in return. New items and wigs are made from hair, due to which their demand has increased.
Rising hair prices: Demand drives price rise
The prices of women’s hair are increasing rapidly in Burhanpur district. The hair which used to be sold for ₹ 2500 per kg till some time ago, is now being sold for up to ₹ 3000 per kg. As Diwali approaches, the price of hair has increased by ₹ 500 per kg this month. Sheikh Yunus, a hair buyer, told Local 18 that he roams around the streets buying women’s hair. From a day’s hard work, they get about 250 grams to half a kilo of hair, which they sell in big markets.
Hair replacement utensils: a new option
The hair buyers provide not only money but also utensils. Women who have less hair prefer to get utensils instead. These hairs are later sold in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, from where they are processed and many types of products are made. Hair is used in making various types of wigs, extensions and other fashion related items, the demand for which is increasing rapidly.
Source of additional income for women
Selling hair has become an additional source of income for women. Many women collect their cut hair, and sell it as soon as the hawkers come to buy it. Some women are struggling with financial constraints, so they prefer to take cash in exchange for hair, while some women consider it better to take utensils in exchange for hair.
Hair business: how is the processing done
Sheikh Yunus informed that this buying and selling of hair is an organized business. Hair is collected in large quantities and sent to big cities, where it is processed. After processing they are used in various industries. The demand for items made of hair like wigs, hair extensions etc. is increasing, due to which the prices of hair are also increasing.
Environmental protection and social contribution
While this process provides a source of additional income to women, it also helps in environmental protection. Hair is reused by processing it properly, which reduces waste. Also, it has become a safe and convenient way for women, through which they can increase their income even sitting at home.
